Dianthus deltoides Confetti

Germination: 4-6 days at 68-72°F (20-22°C). Reduce humidity levels gradually and begin fertilization at 50 ppm nitrogen. Keep soil EC levels below 0.5. Supplemental lighting beginning at this stage will reduce seedling stretch and improve plug quality. During Stage III reduce temperatures to 65-70°F (18-21°C). Increase feed levels to 100-150 ppm nitrogen in a well-balanced fertilizer mix. Begin reducing soil moisture to avoid seedling stretch. During Stage IV continue fertilizing at 100-150 ppm nitrogen in a well-balanced mix. Further reduce temperatures to 62-65°F (17-18°C).

Transplanting: Transplant into 3.5-4" (9-11 cm) pots or 3 plugs per pot for quart (.95 l) production. Finish plants at 50-65°F (10-18°C). Fertilize at 150-200 ppm nitrogen in a well-balanced mix avoiding ammonium nitrate and urea nitrogen. Vernalization is required for flower initiation. Fall and early winter transplantings, grown at cooler temperatures will flower the following spring.

pH: 5.8-6.2

Cultural Hints: Cooler temperature control growth and intensify leaf and flower color. Higher light level promote earlier and more abundant flowers.
